If you are considering getting a Mac, here are some tips that could save you some money.
Tip#1. Black or White? If you are considering a MacBook, buy a white MacBook. It is significantly cheaper than an equivalent black MacBook and goes well with other Apple accessories. Imagine a black MacBook with a white mouse! You don't want the world to know you recently switched, do you? I didn't think so!
Tip#2. Educational Discount. If you are buying the latest model from the Apple store, get the educational discount. Apple (online) does not ask for proof of any kind and the savings are significant.
Tip#3. Smart Buy or Bleeding Edge? Buy the previous revision of a model. Apple sometimes gives good discounts on older revisions. Use the money you saved on upgrading the memory of your purchase. Macs, unlike PCs, provides substantial performance boost with added memory more than a faster processor.
Tip#4. Extras. Shop around for extra memory, rather than buying directly from Apple. Install the memory module yourself. It is extremely easy to do a self installation and takes about 5 minutes.
Tip#5. Mega Savings Tip. Here's a tip that can save you even more on your MacBook. If you are purchasing your MacBook from Amazon.com, apply for Amazon chase visa credit card and pay for your purchase using this card. You get $30 off plus you earn 3 points per dollar spent and you can redeem 2500 points for a $25 purchase at Amazon. So if the MacBook was $1000, you accumulate 3000 points which is worth an additional $30. That's deferred tax ($60 or more) + $30 off for using Amazaon credit card + $30 accumulated points + $100 Amazon rebate, a savings of $220 or more!
Tip#6. Windows on a Mac. Remember, even if you are only looking for a windows notebook, a MacBook purchase is worth it. Macs can run windows natively or using a VM and doesn't depreciate as quickly as a Dell.
Tip#7. Refurbished With Warranty. Look for Apple refurbished MacBooks. They come with one year warranty just as a new non-refurbished Macbook and you get heavy discounts from Apple. You have nothing to lose.
Tip#8. Defer Taxes. Be aware that even if you buy from Apple store online, you have to pay taxes. To defer taxes look for an online retailer like Amazon. Amazon prices are the same as listed on Apple's website, plus they do not charge state tax (unless you are a resident of WA). Both Apple and Amazon provide free shipping.
Tip#9. Rebates. Amazon usually also gives you a $100 rebate, so the price actually turns out to be cheaper than Apple.com
Tip#10. Non-Intel Macs. Do not buy non-intel Macs (iBook, PowerBook). They are being phased out and will depreciate in value quickly. These don't run windows either as they use a different processor architecture.
Tip#11. Buy Anywhere, Service At Any Apple Store. Remember, even if you purchase your Mac from a non-Apple store, you can still take them to an Apple store for servicing.
Tip#12. Learn To Love Amazon! Sometimes when a new model or revision is announced by Apple, Amazon too gives steep discounts on earlier revisions.
Tip#13. Warranty. If you are buying used, consider getting a Mac which still has warranty
Tip#14. Applecare. If you intend to get Applecare, avoid getting Applecare at the time of purchase. You can always add Applecare later on, just before your warranty is about to expire.
Tip#15. Others. Do consider other Apple retailers . Some of them give out coupons that can be applied toward a Mac purchase

Update: As one of the readers has commented, you do have to pay sales tax for your online purchases that weren't taxed, when you do your taxes. This is called a 'use tax'. Please consult your tax consultant for information pertaining to your state.

Its not just the color its actually a different surface altogether, its a sorta soft matte finish

avoid taxes?
you mentioned avoiding the taxes in line 8. you are technically still required to pay taxes on stuff shipped out of state. it is just not the responsibility of the merchant to collect them. there are fields in your tax forms for this. what you put there is the business of you, your lawyers, and your auditors. check it out.

On amazon's visa card, you get one point for every dollar worth of purchase and three points for every dollar if purchased from amazon.com. And as mentioned in the article, you can redeem 2500 points for $25 amazon.com gift certificate.
If you shop at amazon frequently, this is not a bad deal at all!

If you have a discover card, you can log onto discovercard.com and click on the shop discover link. Apple gives a 5% CashBack bonus for purchases made through this site. This is in addition to the regular ~1% you'd get.

I just visited the website. There is no 5% cashback bonus offer

foremost tip
don't buy a mac, buy a pc and save about 40% on the hardware.

You get what you pay for. If
You get what you pay for. If you want a cheap P.O.S. that has to use 3rd party system software to act simular to a Macintosh then go ahead and buy a dell.
You'll also get all the bugs & viruses that go with it.

I use a dell and a macbook.
I use a dell and a macbook. To be fair, dell systems are rock solid. I have a 5 year old dell that still works, never needed a repair.
But Mac is just not about good looks. People who have never used a Mac don't realize how some things are really so easy on a Mac. I'll give a real example. I had a G5 mac (which uses a PPC processor). Then I bought a new MacBook that uses an Intel chip. I was quite apprehensive, since I had no idea how I'm going to transfer all my stuff, programs and data from my G5. Added to the complication the new MacBook had Tiger OS and the old G5 Panther and programs written for new completely different processors.
Coming from PC world, I was concerned. I remember how painful even upgrading from win 98 to Windows 2000 was. On the mac, all I had to do was click on a program. Seriously, no questions, no messageboxes popped up, nothing! My new Macbook running Tiger feels exaclty like the G5! As a programmer I know how difficult it is to pull something like this and make it work so flawlessly!
Though I believe the Mac vs PC ads are highly exaggerated, I think there is some truth to it! :)

buying a mac
I actually bought a mac a couple of years ago, a PowerPC G5. The salesperson told me it didn't have a fan in it. That was shocking (in 1985/6, I had an early mac; it didn't have a fan in it, either, and it kept breaking down). I bought the service plan, which I never do. Good thing. The first time I took it in, they plunked about $1,800 of repairs into it; the second time I took it in, they put in another $1,000. Back in February, the disk drive started powering down then back up. I opened the window, located behind the computer. The problem went away. I know have a desk fan that blows on the back of the Mac. One of these decades, Steve Jobs is gonna realize you need to put a fan in these things. If every three months or so, your components are going bad, either get an interior fan installed (if that's possible), or get a desk fan. My fan has nylon "blades," so I don't get cut when I reach back there. Not sure if I would get another Mac.

Black vs. white macbook will
Black vs. white macbook will be a very interesting debate! I love my black Macbook, but I agree with the author, it doesn't go well with the white remote and white adapter! Why doesn't apple make black accessories? They charge almost $150 more just for the color
