This document describes how to manage your mobile phone with Wammu via bluetooth on Fedora 8. Depending on the manufacturer and model of your mobile phone, you'll be able to retrieve your contacts (SIM & phone), calls, messages, todos, calendar and system information. You can also create contacts, events, todos and messages or manage data backups. In addition you can use the bluetooth manager to access your mobile phone like a standard storage media or use the Gnome phone manager for realtime messaging.

This howto is a practical guide without any warranty - it doesn't cover the theoretical backgrounds. There are many ways to set up such a system - this is the way I chose.

1 Preliminary Note

I used a Sony Ericsson K750i for this howto. The basic functions like filebrowsing (step 3) and live messaging (step 4) should work with most mobile phones. Have a look at the list of supported phones and the phone database to find out if your mobile phone is supported by Wammu.

2 Getting started

2.1 Bluetooth Manager Configuration

The bluetooth manager is available in the top gnome-panel. Right click on it and select "Preferences".

On the first tab you can adjust the operation mode and assign a name to your bluetooth adapter. Later, after pairing with your mobile phone, you'll see it as a bonded device.

The second tab contains the service settings. For your mobile phone you'll only need the "Input service".

Mark the first checkbox on the third tab to authorize incomming requests automatically.

2.2 Pairing

First, before you can access your mobile phone, you have to pair it with your system. Right click on the bluetooth manager and select "Browse Device"

Select your mobile phone and click on "Connect".

Your mobile phone will notify you about the incomming request and ask you to enter a passkey. After that click on the bluetooth manager...

...and enter the same passkey as on your mobile phone.

Now the pairing is completed and the mobile phone is bonded with your system.

3 Filebrowser

With the bluetooth manager you can browse your mobile phone like any other storage media. Right click on the bluetooth manager and select "Browse Device".

Select your mobile phone and click on "Connect".

A new nautilus-window appears.

4 Gnome Phone Manager

The gnome phone manager provides live messaging (SMS) with most mobile phones - it is installed by default and available in the gnome applications menu. After you started it, a little icon appears in the top gnome-panel.

4.1 Configuration

Right click on the phone manager an select "Preferences".

Here you can adjust the alert-events for new messages.

This tab contains the settings for the phone onnection. Select your mobile phone and close the window.

4.2 Live Messaging

4.2.1 Send

If you want to send a message (SMS), right click on the phone manager ans select "Send Message".

A new window appears. Write your message, enter a phone-number and click on "Send".

4.2.2 Receive

If a new message (SMS) arrives at your mobile phone it'll be forwarded to your desktop. You can direct reply to the message if you want.
